New job posting at Google hints at a ‘comeback’ for Glass
Finally, there seems to be some evidence that Google’s prestigious Glass project is moving forward. A new job listing on the company’s website hints that Google’s effort towards the Glass is moving in the right direction and maybe nearing the stage of volume production.
First pointed out by Business Insider, Google’s Glass team is looking for an Advanced Technology Manufacturing Engineer, FATP. The FATP, the listing explains, stands for ‘final assembly, test and pack.’ The company is also looking out for candidates with a few preferred qualifications and who have ‘Experience in multiple consumer product launches in a fast pace production ramping environment’ and ‘Strong manufacturing background in developing processes to scale new products, including mechanical fixture designs, with process controls in mind in a rapid schedule.’
According to a previous report, Google Glass is going to get a complete redesign. Glass is now overseen by Ivy Ross, a jewelry designer who runs Google’s smart-eyewear division and Tony Fadell, a former Apple product executive.
“Early Glass efforts have broken ground and allowed us to learn what’s important to consumers and enterprises alike,” Fadell said in a statement. “I am excited to be working with Ivy to provide direction and support as she leads the team and we work together to integrate those learnings into future products,” the statement read.
The report quotes an adviser to Fadell as saying: “There will be no public experimentation. Tony is a product guy and he’s not going to release something until it’s perfect.” Google Glass was unveiled as a prototype in 2012. It was distributed to a select group of people as part of Explorer programme who paid $1,500 to be early adopters.
On 19 January this year, Google quietly suspended selling Google Glass to consumers while continuing to support Glass as an enterprise product.
